How can I determine whether active cooling is necessary for my application?

I would like to avoid active cooling for my application, but I'm not sure how to test this short of clipping the fan wires as described here: http://jevois.org/doc/Fanless.html From what I understand, there's no alternative way to disable the fan, is this correct?

My application involves pose estimation using ArUco markers at around 320x240 resolution, aiming for 30 FPS or better with the global shutter camera and potentially up to 20 markers visible at a time. Is it possible to make an educated guess based on this use case?

Alternatively, is it possible to make an educated guess based on the CPU usage?

camera fails to connect to mac inventor

I have two new JeVois cameras and I cannot get either one of them to connect to my MacBook Pro workstation with Inventor. I have the latest SD flashed and have the camera connected to separate power with more than enough power. The camera boots up and the indicator light is green and then turns orange. I am using a JeVois Y cable with USB B for the power and micro USB plugged into a micro USB to USB B adapter to connect with the Mac. Inventor is up and running when I plug in the camera to the Mac, waiting for a connection. But the camera never connects. Photobooth and StreamLabs OBS both do not see a second camera other than the laptop built in camera. What other troubleshooting can I do?

Actual FOV of standard lens

I have an A33 Jevois camera with standard lens. I'm trying to use this camera for mapping/SLAM purposes, so I need to get FOV relatively accurately. Checking online, there appears to be conflicting specs on this, where the FOV is stated as either 60o or 65o (here http://jevois.org/doc/Lenses.html and here https://www.jevoisinc.com/pages/hardware).

I decided to take the camera to the Vicon motion capture room to see if I could validate either of these figures.

I calculated the FOV by determining the horizontal length a known object was in the camera image, then knowing exactly how far away the camera was from that object, I could calculate the FOV. The figure I kept realising was just shy of 51o (well short of the 60o - 65o).

Have you guys done any testing to determine the effective FOV of this device?

Saving video directly to a PC

I have a quick question about saving videos with the jevois camera. I was wondering if it is possible to save a video recorded by the jevois directly to the host computer the camera is connected to. Basically what I am looking for is the "Save Video" module, but instead of saving the video to the sd card in the jevois camera, I want to save the video directly to a folder on the host computer the camera is connected to.

edit: I actually found a solution on my own. I found the page "Getting started on a windows host computer" and downloaded AMCap, which meets all my needs since it allows me to record the video stream.

JeVois A33 powers up but LED stays green

I bought the JeVois A33 kit (camera, Y cable, SD card and adapter) kit from Amazon. The camera seems to power up (solid green LED and cooling fan spins), but it doesn't enumerate to Windows 10, and I never get any orange flash or solid orange on the LED. I've tried reflashing the MicroSD card as well as using a 64GB Sandisk card, with the current image and the latest archive image.

Is there a way to diagnose where in the boot sequence it's getting stuck?

Thanks in advance.

JeVois Frequently Freezing

Hello,

I just got my JeVois and am running into a problem. I flashed the SD card with the latest image (SD card came with the beginner kit) and plugged the USB cable (also supplied with the beginner kit) into a USB 3.0 port on a MacBook Pro.

When I run the TensorFlowSingle (464x240) in either JeVois Inventor or Webcamoid it will work for anywhere from 10s to 1m, then freeze.

If using Inventor, that's it -- I need to unplug/plug the device to get it back. If using Webcamoid, I have to stop/start the camera a few times to get it back.

I'm just using out of the box demos per instruction with all JeVois parts...so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong.

I can't imagine this is normal. It seems like a cool device, but if it freezes so frequently, I can't use it in my device. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Jevois is not detected by Linux (Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS)

Hello,

A month ago I worked with the card and it worked beautifully. After a few days of rest I reconnected everything and it doesn't works. I can't share the video and even linux doesn't detect the card (with "dmesg" command). I have already installed another microSD and I have also verified the correct insertion of the card. Also I connected the card in others machine and its the same problem.

Could someone guide me what could be the problem?

Interfacing to an ESP32 on RX2/TX2 problems!

I'm having an issue getting the JeVois to work with an ESP32 - I am trying to use RX2/TX2 - but so far I am unable to get it work. For a while I was getting nothing, I read that enabling the pullup on the RX2 would solve the problem, so I did that - and now all I get is a line of "?". I have the baud rate set correctly (115200 in my sketch), but I'm wondering if RX2/TX2 supports it(?)

So I wanted to lower the baudrate on my camera - so I tried to change the settings using this guide and the params.cfg file: http://jevois.org/doc/UserSerial.html

but when I reloaded the module it would say something like "serial:baudrate=9600" unknown or something like that. "serialdev=/dev/ttyS0" also gave the same error.

I thought maybe it could be done in the initscript.cfg file, and saw that "baudrate" is highlighted, but

adding "setpar baudrate 9600" didn't seem to have any effect. so I'm not sure if I'm using it right, or if I have it in the right place. Here is my initscript.cfg file:

setmapping2 YUYV 640 480 20.0 JeVois DemoArUco
setpar serlog None
setpar serout Hard
setpar serstyle Normal

setpar baudrate 9600
streamon

My questions would be has anyone used this with a ESP32, if so what made it work, or how did you make it work? my 2nd question is what is the right way to change the baudrate?

Thanks

Powering the camera through the 4-pin connector (according to the arduino tutorial)

Following the pan-tilt tutorial with Arduino the schematic says that the camera should be powered through the red cable of the 4 pin connection using a clean 5V power supply and says nothing about powering the camera with USB.

But the jevois documentations says that powering the camera using a USB connection is always required.

What is correct? This is the jevois tutorial I am referencing: http://jevois.org/tutorials/UserPanTilt.html

Camera cable extension

Is it possible to find a camera cable extension so that the camera can be about 30cm away from the main circuit? I'm planning to use the camera inside a puppet head and having to dissipate the heat inside the head is going to be problematic.
I don't know if the cable is based on a standard one...
Colors of global shutter sensor seems to be wrong

Hello,

I have replaced the camera of two Jevois cameras, one with the 90° FOV standard sensor (ov9650) and one with the color global shutter (ar0135). However the colors appears to be completely different, in particular the global shutter camera is blueish and the green color almost gray.

Here is the result with standard cam: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tQmZuiFTwcPMJwsJLLakqb6fr-2YzGKO

And with the AR0135 (the lens is the 3.6mm IR from the kit): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IE3MvmVktMj1AvLGkK1f-_e73T3-SRsi

In addition, I have this error at startup on the log output: FTL Camera::getControl: 0xc00c561b failed [22](Invalid argument)

Is this image color normal ? Is there a problem with the hardware ? the configuration of the camera ?

Thank you

Does the camera have an external trigger?

We would like to synchronize several cameras with each other and also with other sensors on our robots (for example lidar). Is this possible with the current hw? That would be the preffered option. If not, is there a sw workaround like listening on serial port for the trigger signal and starting frame capture based on that? If not, can the frame capture be tied to the clock?

Electric noise when using JeVois camera with Arduino

I have an A33 camera. I connected it to an Arduino and trying to do image recognition. I checked that it works fine by logging the messages received from JeVois.

However, when I added a servo I get a lot of unexpected servo movement when I receive messages from the camera. It feels that the camera is introducing current variation into the Arduino circuit. It's not a problem with the servo as I try also adding a LCD and the intensity of the screen varies exactly when the camera receives messages.

I connected:

- the white wire to one Arduino pin

- the yellow to another pin

- the black to Arduino ground

- the red to IOREF of the Arduino

Anyone know what is the problem?

Thanks

Problems with Lenses for ar1035

I recently purchased the ar0135 and have found that when installing the 1.8mm (170 Deg) lens that I cannot get it to focus on anything regardless of the depth that I screw the lens into the mount. This is the same for the 2.5mm (125 Deg) lens.

I was hoping to use the wide angle lens to focus on objects close to the camera but the only lenses I can get to focus have too large of a focal length.

Is there some step I didn't take that I should have before trying to change lenses? It seems like only 2 of the 5 provided will actually screw in to a depth that lets them focus on something.

Green light remains on

Hi, new to Jevois.

I've got a device that I'm not able to detect it on Linux. dmesg shows nothing even after a few minutes. Light remains green on the device. I haven't seen orange or anything else.

I've tried 3 different cables on different (usb2/usb3) ports, even on different computers.
2 cables have the 28AWG/1P - 24AWG/2C mark on them.
The other is a Y cable also with 24AWG/2C mark.

The disk is a a Kingston 32GB micro SD

I've formatted it twice and was able to mount all filesystems without problem.

Any ideas?
thanks

Global shutter restock or alternative

Hi,

I am currently planning on a college project for detecting fast moving small object, and I don’t think the normal camera would suitable for this project. My question is will be the sensors back in stock again and when. Also if there is alternative way to change the sensor by my self, so I can start the project with jevois as soon as possible.

Regards,

I global shutter fan needed

I know that you are supposed replace the fan when using the Global shutter camera (https://www.jevoisinc.com/products/jevois-1-2mp-global-shutter-sensor-with-9-dof-imu-upgrade-kit-monochrome).

However, do you need to? The stock fan is 5v 0.8a and the one included with the global shutter kit is 5v 0.2a so cooling wise I'm guessing it should be OK,

Is mixing charger and computer safe

Is it really safe to plug the power end of the Y-cable into a charger and the other into your host computer? (As described in http://jevois.org/doc/UserConnect.html). It seems to me that there could be a difference in potential between the two?

I wasn't able to find a good answer online. The best i could find is https://superuser.com/a/1022965

Suggestion: new B&W fast sensor 360fps

Hello,

I discovered with pleasure that you have added new sensors for Jevois.
Looking at the Omnivision website I found the ideal sensor for my application (but probably for others too), the OV7251 model.
It is a high speed B&W sensor, up to 360 fps at 120*160px with global shutter.

Manufacturer's link:
https://www.ovt.com/sensors/OV7251

So I launch the idea, if other people are interested, it is the ideal sensor for applications requiring very fast processing, real time.

I do not know at which level it is binding to add a new optional sensor, it could be a complement for the Jevois range, for industial aplications.

P.S. Sorry for my english, my natural language is french.

Best regards,
Arduino Software serial not working when jevois plugged in to USB power only

I've got my code working perfectly with a software serial when the Jevois is plugged into my computer with the data USB cable. But when I use the power cable only, it doesn't work.

I have this for my init.cfg:

setmapping2 YUYV 320 308 30.0 YUYV 320 240 30.0 JeVois TensorFlowEasy

setpar serstyle Normal

streamon

When I run my Arduino sketch, no data appears in the software serial. It shows these init messages but then nothing else:

I tried initialising jevois inside setup:

    jevois.println("streamon");

I get errors like this:

IMU triggered shutter ar0135

Hello,

Looking at the new hardware features available and more particulary :

OnSemi AR0135

IMU TDK/InvenSense ICM-20948.

I am curious to know if we can get the global shutter being trigged by the imu in DMP mode qith a prescaler to have various trigger rate from 10 to 40 Hz.

That would make a basic setup to implement VIO : Visual Inertial Odometry

Here is my prototype , that I would be interested to ''scale down" to a Jevois configuration:

impossible to detect the micro pro arduino board ( win 7 )

Hi Laurent and all ,

( Thanks for having sent the JeVois cam + kit package so quickly !)

So I come here with a driver question arround the Arduino pro micro board in the kit : I tried to connect it to my PC ( win 7 x64 ) and win didn't managed to install the driver . I tried so to manually install it , pointing the Arduino / drivers / directory ( as explained on several web sites ) but win doen't find the needed driver and the board stays "unknown" in the peripherical devices at the end.

Is there a link to the manufacturer of this board maybe , which would share a special driver to help installing it ?

Thanks by advance.
Wireless serial

Hi,

I have some queries on the wireless serial transmission. As extracted from the vision toolkit documentation:

"Wireless serial

We have successfully used an Adafruit Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE. We connected its serial pins to the serial port of JeVois, and wrote a trivial piece of code that would just forward serial data between the serial pins and the BLE module of the Feather. It worked well at 9600 bauds but choked at 115200. Looks like serial transmission over BLE is limited to 9600 bauds. Have a look in JEVOIS:/config/params.cfg for config options we used when transmitting serial data over Bluetooth. Other serial-to-BLE modules are available and should work fine as well, but we have not yet tested. The main drawback with the Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE is its price ($30)."

I was trying to find out the config options in JEVOIS:/config/params.cfg but I couldn't find any. Possible to point me in the right direction for writing the configurations required for forwarding the data from serial com port of the jevois cam over via bluetooth wireless?

Thanks!

Is the ground connection of the UART attached internally to the ground on the USB cable? If not, what are the allowable voltages relative to the USB ground?

I'm asking because I'm concerned about ground loops in my application. I have ideas for how to avoid it, but I'd like to understand what the JeVois has first. If you could provide a schematic and/or part number for the UART level shifting circuitry, that would also be appreciated.

Updating hardware using Allwinner V5?

Have you considered making updated hardware based on the Allwinner V5?

Development board: http://www.lindeni.org/lindenis-v5.html

The V5 SOC is under $10 and it supports dual 4K cameras with hardware binocular depth mapping. It also has a hardware HAAR feature classifier. The SDK is on github: https://github.com/lindenis-org The CPU is same quadcore Cortex-A7 as the A33.

I have one of the dev boards and it has been working without issue. The only thing missing is the tool for using the HAAR classifier with OpenCV. Allwinner has promised this tool and say they will release it once it is working properly. Meanwhile they have provided about a dozen pre-built models.

The SOC also has the hardware to support 8-ch of PDM DMICs to build a microphone array. I have hand-built one and attached it to my dev board. I am able to do DOA calculations using ODAS. https://github.com/introlab/odas

I also have TVM runing on the board. https://tvm.ai/

Can Jevois be passive cooled?

Well of course it can! :)

Question is if someone has already done it?

Other question: is the chip the chip protecting itself from overheating? If I put some heat spreaders on it and it is not enough cooling I wouldn't like to fry it!

Thanks

I'm having issues getting the SD card to stay inserted. I've tried 6 different cards and am having the same issue. Did I get a faulty camera and should I send back? Or is there a quick fix I can do to avoid return?

Loose Mini Connector?

After having my JeVois and using it lightly for several months, the device began to disconnect when the cable moved. The problem has gotten worse, and now the camera does not connect at all. It still receives power from my computer and has both the green and orange status lights, but I am unable to communicate via `jevois-cmd`, nor can JeVois Inventor and guvcview capture any feed.

I have tried a handful of cables, and so it seems to me the Mini USB port on the JeVois itself has been damaged. Does this diagnosis seem correct? Is there any ways to repair the Mini port?

Lines on image

I have just recently recieved my JeVois and have been noticing pink and green vertical and horizontal lines across the images, about one pixel wide.

So my questions are:

1) Is this normal?

2) If this isn't normal would a new lens+sensor fix it?

3) Are there good algorithms out there to remove them/digital noise?

Timeout after 5 min on Rasberry pi. Runs for hours with same script on PC. Any ideas?

I am using the cam to run Darknet Yolo and recognize objects. I have a python scripts that sends the commands to Jevoi via serial USB to set it up and gets a response that I can use. I found the serstyle in the docs which was the final piece of the puzzle. This is all working fine when I run it from my PC.

I want to run this on a Raspberry Pi. I've moved the script over, made the changes that are needed to the paths and path to the USB serial, etc and it all runs perfect. The problem is that it times out after about five minutes. In my script, I'm polling the USB serial and printing out the output and I get:

b'DKY 167\r\n'
b''
b'DKY 168\r\n'
b''
select timeout
b''
serial.serialutil.SerialException: device reports readiness to read but returned no data (device disconnected or multiple access on port?)

What does "select timeout" mean and what can I do to make this reliable?

I'm using the two tailed USB cable that was supplied and plug it in to 2 ports on the raspberry pi. Do you think this is a power problem? Should I try putting the second head into another USB wall wart? I don't want to overvoltage it and kill it. I've done that with arduinos and this is a little more expensive.

JeVois 1.3MP Sensor with 120deg Fisheye Lens

Hello everyone.

I have changed the lens of the camera for one with 120 degree vision, which I highly recommend as it has improved by 30% the effectiveness of the Robot Tracking system.

I have uploaded a video to youtube in which the camera is shown tracking an ArUco code without losing sight of it.
